Getting Fit in Palm Valley by Mae Logue

By Mae Logue

After weeks stuck in quarantine wondering if getting off the couch for a home workout is worth it, many of us are in desperate need of personal motivation and friendly faces from a distance. While many gyms and fitness centers around Ponte Vedra have begun opening up again, very few have the rare ability to make you smile while exercising. In trying times, good news prevails: Valley Fit is open.

Valley Fit is led by Coach Amy Schottel-McIntyre, a registered personal trainer and former beloved cross-country coach for Ponte Vedra High School. She offers boot camp classes in her front yard in Palm Valley, as well as personal training or running sessions. She has years of experience with coaching as well as endless patience, and genuine encouragement plus she lets you choose which playlist to blare.

Since opening up following COVID-19, Coach Amy has adjusted her Sunrise Bootcamp classes to ensure participants remain safe and healthy. Each group is at least 6 ft apart, mats and weights are wiped down before each class or you can bring your own. The class is a full-body HIIT style workout, with several different stations and pre-planned exercises for strength training and conditioning. The class is usually split into three parts- a quick warmup with two rounds of HIIT exercises, a longer circuit with weights and cardio that is repeated three times, with an ab workout snuck in right at the end. You’ll think that you couldn’t possibly do another plank or squat, but Coach Amy’s constant positivity and energy will change your mind.

For those interested, classes are $10 per person for drop-ins but monthly payment plans are also offered. To get in touch with Coach Amy and find out more about her classes, go to valleyfit.net.

Bring your own yoga mat and weights, stay six feet apart from others, and get ready to sweat!
