Hunger in Your Backyard: SOUPer Bowl is Thursday, Feb 2

By Heather Jones

Nease High School will host the 2nd Annual SOUPer Bowl this Thursday, February 2, from 6pm-8pm.

The event invites guests to sample gourmet soups from local restaurants to help raise money for Blessings in a Backpack of St Johns County.

The SOUPER Bowl committee not only wants to raise money for this important cause, but also wants to raise awareness of the 600+ St. Johns County students that are in need of food over the weekends.

Blessings in a Backpack Feeds 600+ Children Weekly in Our Backyard

These kids participate in the free breakfast and lunch program at school during the week but many find themselves with little or no food over the weekends. It costs $100 per student to provide them with weekend meals. Students from various St. Johns county High Schools volunteer to organize and pack the 600 +backpacks with food each week for these students to take home on Friday.

Patti Ann Farrar, chairperson of the event, is super excited about this year’s lineup of participating restaurants. There will be over 20 local chefs bringing their most popular soups for you to try.

Returning this year are favorites, Trasca Eatery, Restaurant Medure, and Sawgrass Country Club, along with some new favorites such as Palm Valley Fish Camp, Moxie Kitchen + Cocktails and Berndt Ends BBQ.

“The Inaugural event last year exceeded all expectations,” said Farrar.

The SOUP-er Bowl raised over $23,000 and had 436 attendees.

Farrar encourages people to come out this Thursday to enjoy an evening out, support local businesses, sample delicious soups all while making a difference in a child’s life.
