The Show Goes On
For over six decades, community theater has been the beating heart of local storytelling in the Jacksonville Beaches area. But fourteen months ago, that heartbeat faced its toughest challenge yet. An isolated fire, paired with the subsequent severe flooding from necessary sprinkler systems, left the beloved Players by the Sea facility devastated and its operations temporarily displaced.
But true to the spirit of the arts, the curtains didn't stay down for long.
On Tuesday, June 9, local leaders, artists, volunteers, and supporters gathered to witness a momentous occasion: the official grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony of Players by the Sea.
A Community-Driven Resurrection
The atmosphere was electric as staff stood alongside Jacksonville Beach Mayor Chris Hoffman and Atlantic Beach Mayor Curtis Ford to cut the ribbon, marking a brand-new chapter for the venue.
The extensive, year-long renovation project was a massive undertaking, but it served as a powerful reminder of what makes this theater so special: its people. Powered by passionate volunteers and dedicated artists, the venue has always been a collaborative space where creativity is celebrated, and conversation is sparked.
More Than Just a Stage
Players by the Sea has called its current building at 106 N. 6th St. in Jacksonville Beach home since 1999. Over the last quarter-century, it has evolved into a vital cultural anchor for the neighborhood.
For Bradley Akers, the theater’s Executive Director, the grand re-opening represents something much deeper than just a repaired physical structure.

He noted that the grand re-opening stands as a major milestone in the theater's history, attributing the achievement entirely to the profound generosity, encouragement, and uplifting support of the local community.
Looking Forward to the Spotlight
With the renovations complete, audiences can look forward to experiencing the arts in a fully revitalized space. The theater features a spacious 150-seat house and a notably wide stage—a unique architectural asset that gives directors the flexibility to bring large, vibrant ensembles to life simultaneously.
The physical structure may be updated, but the mission remains exactly the same: to provide an inclusive, artistic home where community and storytelling meet.
