The St. Johns County School District is seeking comments on the proposed 2016-2017 school calendar.
Last year, the calendar was a concern for parents of middle and high school parents. End of term testing was falling after the winter break, which made for a stressful holiday. It looks like the new calendar takes care of that with testing falling before the break.
Personally, I’d like to see a calendar that redistributes breaks by using a 6-week term system allowing for: a slightly shortened summer break (no different than what we now have), the traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring breaks, as well as a September fall break and a February winter break.
I like the flexibility of being able to vacation during off times. And extended summers are a challenge for a working parent. Here’s a link to our old school’s calendar. Loved it! Like I said, the grading terms were in six week increments as opposed to semesters, which might make someone’s head explode in SJSCD. But, it’s an idea.
A survey link is available on the school district website for people to provide input on the calendar. The survey link can be accessed here: www.stjohns.k12.fl.us/calendar/proposed/.
SJCSD encourages people to submit ideas, suggestions or concerns about the proposed calendar.
Feedback will be collected through Friday, October 23.
The final proposed calendar must be approved by the School Board.
