Summer Plans: I’m Bored. I’m Home. It’s Summer.

By Willow Logue

It’s hot out there! Time is moving both extra slow and extra fast. If you are bored or are looking for some ways to make it last, here are some suggestions:

Watch TV

Most of us are going to put in some quantity screen time. You could just watch whatever and call it a day/week/month or watch with intention. Have a film festival – pick a genre: Oscar winners, Dance flicks, Summer blockbusters…with a theme it’s not just lying on the couch, you planned it. Or pick a show to stream, make 2018 the summer of Billions or The Americans or Parks and Rec. For more recommendations check out Vulture’s What to Stream. When you think back on the summer you might remember more than if you had just flipped thru. (There is no scientific evidence to back me up).

Read

It’s a crazy idea but summer offers the perfect long days of non-commitment to dive into a well-told story. Challenge yourself and read a Ponte Vedra Summer Plans classic or re-read a famous kids book. I recently read “A Wrinkle In Time.” Not a huge commitment but satisfying.  Or if a story is too much of a commitment find a cookbook and try to make as many of the recipes as you can…healthy cooking, French cooking, or ice cream. There is a lot to choose from. Don’t forget about your local public library.

Exercise

When it’s a humid 90 outside, exercising is hard to do but science does say exercising makes us all happier and live longer. In Jax Beach, Orangetheory lets you try the first class for free. Big Fish Yoga has a free class at the Surfer Bar Sunday’s at 10. There is also this website called youtube? Health Magazine, Yoga For Adriene, 7-minute workout all are available plus more. Or take advantage of living near water and take surf lessons, rent a kayak or a paddleboard.

Learn Something

Listen to a podcast, watch a documentary. If you want to give online classes a try:  Skillshare is a good resource for creativity,  Coursera offers college-level classes and Masterclass is taught by experts/famous people ie. Gordon Ramsey and cooking. Or learn more about what’s going in Jacksonville and volunteer for a cause you are interested in.

Do Nothing

Hey, it’s summer! Take advantage of the slower pace. Take a nap, get sucked into social media, be aimless. Soon enough, fall will be here and with it hurricane seasons, commitments, school, etc.

Let us know if you have any suggestions!
